  • For the purposes of your survey it has to be Chesty. I''ve just said good night to him too many times. But my favorite is SgtMjr Yoder who taught me to remain a Marine although I no longer wear a uniform.
    8/13/2008 9:05:44 PM
  • The most decorated man in the history of the Corps and NOTHING can touch the legend he has left us ! Maybe GySgt Carlos Hathcock comes close.
    8/13/2008 9:06:36 PM
  • I have voted for Brad due to the fact that he is the only Marine on this list that I have personally met. I met Brad through a friend of mine and I found him to be one of the most inspiring, dedicated and humble Marines I have had the pleasure to be around. After reading his book, I was inspired all over again. Truly, a national symbol of the heroism that makes the United States Marines and all our other servicemen the best on the planet! 8/13/2008 10:12:20 PM
  • My son served with SgtMaj. Kasal in Iraq. All of the above names had distinguished careers, but Kasal is the only "modern day" hero listed. His actions in Iraq, was nothing short of heroic, but any of our present Marines would have done the same if in his shoes.

  • I met Gunny Hathcock in Durham, NC. I also read and requested that he sign my copy of "Sniper" for me. (which he did...) I was in Khe Sahn (68-69). After reading "Sniper", I felt like giving the Gunny all the medals I was awarded. He was pretty crippled at the time I met him (from burns suffered, while saving others from an RPG hitting an "Ontoast". A truly humble but deserving hero.

  • My loyalties are divided between GySgt Hathcock and Maj. Boyington however, considering that I was of the Viet Nam era and while assigned to the Air Wing, a Ground Marine by training, I must vote for the GySgt.

  • I served under him in ''65-''67 at Camp H.M.Smith Hawaii when he was CG FMFPAC. Very tough but very fair. Saw him bust a L/Cpl on the gate for looking down at him when he saluted. That was a big no no. For all he did in his career and his leadership he should have been the next CMC but.......! Semper Fi to the "Brute"
    8/14/2008 12:54:06 AM
  • I''m sure Chesty will win in a walk, and deservedly so. I voted for Dan Daly because I think his long record of heroism is under rated--it exceeds even my long record of skating out of work details. My personal favority is my old Col. from the reserves, John Studt, now living in ME and re-fighting WWII on a map in his attic. A great leader I was proud to serve under. And I should give a nod to Brute Krulak, our CG when I was in WestPAC on my way to ''Nam. He''s a hell of a Marine, and less well known than he deserves. It was an honor for me to wear the same uniform as these men. When America no longer has Marines like these, she will fall. And the professional bed wetters will wail, "Why didn''t someone do something?" Just before they are shot. Robert A. Hall Cpl, USMC 1964-68 Massachusetts Senate, 1973-83 SSgt, USMCR, 1977-83.

  • As a child, my father took me to Virginia to meet ''the great man'' himself. I remember sitting on a porch, eatting cookies and drinking iced tea, while my father and "Chesty'' talked about shared memories... but my father still swears, if I''d been a boy, I''d have been named "Lou Diamond" after the the most amazing Marine he ever knew... so its a toss-up to me! Glynis

  • What about Lt. Col. Bryan McCoy???
    8/14/2008 1:14:53 AM
  • He didn''t back down to anyone! Most of all, He defeated a fascist coup to take over the Presidency, so if not for the BGen we may not even be the USofA. Also, wrote a great book, "War is a Racket." Which is still quoted in congress and the senate. And last, He stood up to the government. Unfortunately it is speculated that all the great reasons that make him a great Marine, also kept Him from becoming a Commandant. You may have heard of who did, BGen Lejuene.
    8/14/2008 1:24:49 AM
  • Please add Gen Ray Davis to the list. He was a fine Marine and a real gentleman.

  • General Puller epitomized what we marines all tried to be. He was legend, idol, model.
    8/14/2008 4:27:32 AM
  • "Confirmed Kills" does not even begin to tell his story. Many, many were the times that Whitefeather slipped through the wire and spent long days and nights simply doing what he did best -- and did so without taking along a "Spotter..." whose only real purpose when it came to Whitefeather''s work was to document the fact that Gunny Hathcock never missed, and risked his all time and again to get in just the right position to remove (most of the time) far more than just one or two. Whitefetaher taking a Spotter was like someone taking a Pork Chop to a Bar Mitzvah.

  • I just looked at the voting results, so this is my second time to vote, and I see where SgtMaj Daly got the most votes. Yes, he is famous in the Corps and maybe a lot of folks in the rest of the world know of him, but it''s time that the "old timers" from VN and the other campaigns to move over and let fine men like SgtMaj Kasal have the glory. He faced odds like most of us never have and never will (I was one of those "Cold-War" Marines 1972-1990). My vote earlier was for SgtMaj Kasal and I am voting again for that fine young Marine. Come on brother and sister Marines, vote for the Marines that are making a difference in today''s not-so-cold World War.

  • I was stationed at FMFLANT HQ Camp Elmore when I retired after 20 years. I didn''t want a big cermony just my Company CO (?) and my ''Marines'' in attendance. Approximately 5 minutes before the reading of the orders in walks LTGEN Gray, CG FMFLANT. He asks if I would mind if he read the orders. That was 1985, I have many great memories but my last active duty day is probably the greatest. No matter what rank Marines take care of Marines. CWO-3 P.B. Leach, Retired

  • My husband had the privelage of serving this GREAT man. He was commandant when my husband was in. We met him personally at the "beach bash" in Camp LeJeune. My husband turned around and almost fainted when he saw him standing there with his wife holding OUR son! LOL! I would like to think this wonderful man is responsible for our son becoming a marine. I think the greatness wore off on him when he held him because my son achieved Corporal a little over a year in. He will be in 2 years as of 9/23/08 and he already has his points etc for Sergeant!!! With any luck he will move up the ranks and become as great as General Gray. It was such a true honor to meet him and his wife. I will never forget it and will cherish the memory forever!

  • My father was a Corpsman in Viet Nam and pulled General Pullers son out of the bush on a medivac run. General Puller happened to be in country at the time and ordered Lt. Puller to be sent to the Repose via bus with the rest of the Marines instead of by air. My father rode with him and handed him off to the surgeons. He later received a personal letter from General Puller thanking him. Not that he wanted it or needed it. He was just doing his job. The letter was cherished, howver, because my mother (a former Marine) and my father both understood who, and what, Chesty Puller represented. Unfortunately, it was lost when our furniture was stolen during one of our re-assignments. General Puller has been an inspiration to Marines almost from day one. And he never forgot where he came from. Semper Fi, Chesty.

  • Chesty Puller is a given. However, GySgt Carlos Hathcock would be a gnats eyelash away from a tie with Maj Boyington.
    8/14/2008 10:18:10 AM
  • Every Marine is a Rifleman and he was the best.
    8/14/2008 10:18:47 AM

    8/14/2008 10:21:59 AM
  • For it to be my favorite, I would have to know the man. I think Chesty is everyones favorite, but not counting him, I think Al Gray is a Marine''s Marine.

    8/14/2008 10:25:45 AM

    8/14/2008 10:53:11 AM
  • How about Jack Lucas, I think any Marine who Joins the Marines at the age of 14 sneaks onto a ship. Fights in Iwo Jima and jumps on a live hand grenade deserves to be on a list like this. If GySgt Basilone, can make this list, so can PFC Jacklyn Harold Lucas.

  • This a hard survey, These Marines are some of the most distinguished and contaversial members of our fraternity and are the standards we use for what a Marine is. But I have to pick Chesty. Though I served under Gen. A. M. Grey OORAH!!!
    8/14/2008 10:58:04 AM
  • A true list of Marine heroes - but Chesty was a Marine''s Marine.
    8/14/2008 10:59:53 AM
  • With his winning of the M O H he did not have to return to battle. I admire his courage with which he said that he felt that he had to return to his platoon to make sure they were going to be ok. Of course every one of those names deserves to be everyones favorite Marine. They were all great men.
    8/14/2008 11:02:30 AM
  • All of these Marines are outstanding but Chesty has my vote on this one.

    8/14/2008 12:18:29 PM
  • Boy, this was tough. All on the list are Great! There were a few missing though; Gen John "Last Gunfighter" Hopkins, Gen Caulfield, and Gen Mundy. I worked for these gentlemen as I did Gen Gray. But of all of these Marines Gunny Hathcock, who I met in Virginia, stands above them all!
    8/14/2008 12:19:24 PM
  • This Marine stood up in an open field under tremendous fire and yelled C''mon you sons of bitches do you want to live forever! How can you top that two medals of honor to boot.
    8/14/2008 12:22:15 PM
  • He was our first WWII Air Ace and I got to know him personally in the early 60''s.
    8/14/2008 12:24:39 PM
  • He was the best in his field.
    8/14/2008 12:27:24 PM
  • General Gray only had 2 stars when I was standing tall at a Dog-n-pony show on Camp Jejeune. He and the others made their way down the line of Marines and weapons. He stopped at my 50 cal squad and gruffly asked "Where''s your Sgt?" I was standing behind the gunners so I stepped forward, wondering what the Hell, and spoke up. He stepped beside me, put his arm around my shoulders, and very graciously asked "Can I bum a chew?" I replied that all I had was some Redman, but he was more than welcome to it. He took all I had and gave me the empty bag back with the customary "Thanks Marine!" A week later my CO calls me in and on his desk sits a case of Redman, comps of the CG 2nd Mar Div. We never forget the good times!
    8/14/2008 12:29:28 PM
  • Met and shook his hand while stationed at Camp lejeune in the late 1950''s He started the practice of allowing liberty in civilian clothes and extended long weekend liberties..(the original 96 hr pass)

  • As it should be....
    8/14/2008 12:30:58 PM
  • LtGen Victor Krulak was second in command with the 6th Mar Div on Okinawa, outstanding officer. He was largely and solely responsible for saving our Corps from extinction when the Army and Navy were on the brink of absorbing us into extinction. Superb history as a warrior. I am proud to have served under his command with Gen.Shepard in the 29th Marines, 6th Marine Division.
    8/14/2008 12:31:00 PM

    8/14/2008 12:40:38 PM
  • "Manila John" is my favorite Marine because after winning the Medal of Honor @ Guadalcanal and being sent home on a War Bond Drive, he volunteered to return to combat, though he didn''t have to, because he desired to be with his buddies and do what Marines do!

    8/14/2008 12:46:23 PM
  • "Come''on you sons of bitches. Do you want to live forever!?" SgtMjr Dan Daily is the reason Marines,to this day,are called "Devil Dogs."
    8/14/2008 12:47:50 PM
  • This a second vote, after Chesty -- I saw a comment from a Marine stationed at Camp H.M. Smith, HI, 65-67, who must have known Capt. Elton J. "Jim" Keeley, my first Marine friend after I got out of Navy boot camp at Bainbridge MD. We went separate way, but had a reunion in 67 in HI. Keeley was a Mustang, enlisted to OCC, then Vietnam, etc., reverted back to highest enlisted rate after Nam, then entered a WO program, and I last was with him at LAX in 1986 on his way to HQ USMC. I found an obit a couple of years ago -- the GOOD ONES die too young. I''d love to hear from any Marine who knew Keeley. Semper Fi, sir, while you guard the gates of Heaven. Keeley was a Marine''s MARINE, in every way. God bless all of our Marines, past and present, since 11/10/1775. Jane, Maumelle, AR. P.S. The sailors still claim to be the first, but we know different. God bless all God''s Marines.

    8/14/2008 1:39:37 PM
  • I certainly think that General Peter Pace, former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (first Marine ever to hold that position) should have been included on this most honored list of Marines. Something could also be said of the inclusion of General James Jones as Supreme Allied Commander, Europe (also a first time honor for a Marine).

  • Although tough on his troops,he knew ''em. Sgt. Bob Cornley, 7th Marines, told of a night at Chosin reservoir when Col. Puller gave him a drink of whiskey. "It was like something from heaven, not just a drink of tanglefoot (Old Grand Dad Whiskey). You can''t know what that did for a freezing man . . . from going mad or becoming a casualty. • my older brother served with Chesty Puller at the Chosin ,and said he was the real deal. A Marines Marine.
    8/14/2008 3:17:04 PM
  • Every Marine on this list deserves to be there. However, there will only be one Chesty Puller.
    8/14/2008 3:18:10 PM
  • Whitefeather is my second choice. My Dad isn''t on the list.....
    8/14/2008 3:18:22 PM
  • He started out as enlisted and then became an officer. Should be a requirement for officers.
    8/14/2008 3:20:32 PM
  • Actually my second favorite, behind P. X. Kelly.
    8/14/2008 3:22:12 PM
  • Boyington. Medal of Honor. POW. Airwinger.
    8/14/2008 3:23:38 PM
  • There can be only ONE!!!
    8/14/2008 3:29:32 PM
  • I served with SGTMAJ Kasal in Fallujah 2004. 3rd Battalion 1st Marines. Semper Fi.
    8/14/2008 3:30:32 PM
  • Here''s to a Leatherneck who even though was surrounded at one point, found a way to squash the opposition then shuck out a quote that motivates this Marine well past eternity "we''re surrounded... that simplifies our problem... OOOOORAAAHHH!!!! Chesty is my eternal HERO!!!
    8/14/2008 3:34:52 PM
  • THEY ALL DESERVE THE VOTE. I KNOW, WE CALL THEM "THE DREAM TEAM"!!!!!
    8/14/2008 3:36:07 PM
  • He didn''t want to leave his buddies behind; doesn''t that sum it up for every Marine who ever served? His selfless act would cost him his life on Iwo Jima.
    8/14/2008 3:45:59 PM
  • He''s one of the reasons I joined Marine Aviation.
    8/14/2008 3:47:11 PM
  • Where''s Colonel "Bull" Fisher Magnificent Bastards 2/4
    8/14/2008 3:51:58 PM
  • Manila John Basilone should be way up there. First MOH receipient of WWII(Guadalcanal) and Navy Cross (Iwo Jima-KIA). Note: Gunnery Sergeant Basilone is the only Marine listed who gave the supreme sacrifice. The others may be "legendary" in their own right, but Basilone was the real deal, a super grunt.
    8/14/2008 4:06:27 PM
  • I guess GOD needed to get the devil from a distant so the devil never new what hit him, one shot one kill!!!!
    8/14/2008 4:06:55 PM
  • WHY CANT WE VOTE FOR MORE THAN ONE 1.BEST LINE OFFICER CHESTY PULLER 2.BEST COMBAT PILOT PAPPY BOYINGTON 3.BEST SNIPER GUNNY HATHCOCK
    8/14/2008 4:09:06 PM
  • WHY CANT WE VOTE FOR MORE THAN ONE 1.BEST LINE OFFICER CHESTY PULLER 2.BEST COMBAT PILOT PAPPY BOYINGTON 3.BEST SNIPER GUNNY HATHCOCK OH YEAH WHERE IS LTCOL OLIVER NORTH OR GEN PETER PACE OR MY OLD CO COL DABNEY

    8/14/2008 4:26:11 PM
  • It is really tough to make a choice sense all of them rank #1 on my list of all time greats who exemplify Semper FI to the nth degree!
    8/14/2008 4:27:01 PM
  • Gen Gray would be second since I served under him and he was always looking out for the enlisted men just like Chesty
    8/14/2008 4:46:22 PM
  • Gung Ho
    8/14/2008 4:47:59 PM
  • By far a genuis who was ahead of his time. No disrepect to any of the rest on the list, but just read General Butlers book " War is a Racket" and that will open your eyes. Furthermore Gen Butler was the Mayor of Philadelphia, was tried for treason for speaking out against Mussallini, and had two , although it should have been three Medal of Honors! A remarkable Marine if ever there was one, Semper Fi.
    8/14/2008 5:02:10 PM
  • Nobody can match Ole Chesty.
    8/14/2008 5:03:48 PM
  • Chesty saw it all and did it all, and thought only of what was best for the Corps while doing it. A Marine''s Marine!
    8/14/2008 5:10:52 PM
  • Why didn''t you include Marines from the 18th and 19th centuries?
    8/14/2008 5:17:26 PM
  • No comment needed.
    8/14/2008 5:21:46 PM
  • What about SgtMajor Michael S. Curtin USMCR? Ironmike was killed in the North Tower on 911. He went back in to be certain that all of his squad (Emergency Service - NYPD) were out when it came down. Earlier, SgtMajor Curtin craled through the debris of the Oklahoma City Federal Building to recover the body of a Marine Major. He braved all of the disintegrated cables, bricks, etc. to accomplish such a hazardous task. Earlier, he served with distinction in the first Gulf War with CoD, 2ndLAI Bn (since renamed LAR). Having stood at his side, I am a better person and Marine.
    8/14/2008 5:34:27 PM
  • GySgt Hathcock''s dedication to his craft is an inspirtation to all!
    8/14/2008 5:35:52 PM
  • He took those whom others had given up on and made them the success he knew they could be.
    8/14/2008 5:37:31 PM
  • I would not vote for LtGen Lewis B. (Chesty) Puller. Back in the 50th when I was in the Marines, he made the comment that ''He would kill a regiment of Marines to get the Congressional Metal of Honor''. The only one he didn''t have.
    8/14/2008 5:46:33 PM

  • Should have been Commandant...wfg
    8/14/2008 6:11:22 PM
  • The "finest" rifle shot and master woodsman that ever lived. Sorry he was shortchanged by my beloved Corps.
    8/14/2008 6:23:11 PM
  • loved the guy, my dad met him while he was in the marines. great fighter pilot and marine
    8/14/2008 6:27:24 PM
  • mine not on list my drill instructors from parris island ptl.2007 1966 best marines ever
    8/14/2008 6:30:31 PM
  • I think that "Chesty" Puller defines the Marine Corps in that he is well known outside Marine circles. You mention the name "Chesty" Puller to a civilian and they know who you are talking about. It is sad that our todays leaders have to be so political correct and cannot be like "Chesty"
    8/14/2008 6:34:16 PM
  • this black sheep herder gets my vote only because you didn''t have the guts or brains to list Joe Foss!!!
    8/14/2008 6:34:55 PM
  • Got us back on the correct course.
    8/14/2008 6:52:45 PM
  • Chesty was the only Marine on the list I''ve met and about whom I know the most. He visited our 1964 gold medal Competition Squad at Camp Lejune and shook my hand. It was quite an honor and a moment I''ll always remember. SgtMaj Dan Daly would be a close runner-up. I believe he was a little guy, 5''5" or so and was awarded 2 MOH''s, and if my memory serves me right, a Navy Cross. All these Marines are fine role models, but these two stand out in my mind.
    8/14/2008 6:54:53 PM
  • I was stationed on Quantico when she was commander of Marine Corps Systems command. Chesty was a great book and he is the appitemy of what a Marine is....
    8/14/2008 6:56:47 PM
  • Imperfect in the same way(s) so many of us are.
    8/14/2008 6:58:53 PM
  • I had the pleasure to visit Elephant Valley also!
    8/14/2008 7:04:58 PM
  • Served under General Puller in Pearl Harbor Guard Co. in 1948 and then in Korea from Inchon until he left. Especially remembered him from Kojo, Korea in October 1950 when he brought down reinforcements to help us clean up the guerilla forces. We had our backs to the ocean when they hit us. I can still see and hear him with his pipe inhis mouth! We''d have followed him into hell.
    8/14/2008 7:09:36 PM
  • I now live right next door to LtGen Krulak''s son, but having been an enlisted Marine it had to be Gunny Basilone...
    8/14/2008 7:10:42 PM
  • THE Marine!!!
    8/14/2008 7:10:48 PM
  • Finger on the trigger.... thinking man''s job.... hard dude, who never stepped back from responsibility
    8/14/2008 7:15:39 PM
  • "One-shot, One-kill"
    8/14/2008 7:15:55 PM
  • Gen.Al Gray who I personally know was the best damn Marine. He told it like it was and didn''t pull any punch''s SEMPER FI to a true MARINE
    8/14/2008 7:20:30 PM
  • This man was the epitomy of a guts and glory Marine.
    8/14/2008 7:22:45 PM
  • what happened to "Ira Hayes" my number one choice.
    8/14/2008 7:30:20 PM
  • Gotta be!
    8/14/2008 7:33:34 PM
  • I voted for Gunny Hathcock, but there is a whole generation of Marine JROTC cadets who would vote for LtC Arthur Eppley or any one of his great SNCO''s that worked for him in Campbell High School District, San Jose CA. Kirby Thompson, Prattville AL
    8/14/2008 7:51:33 PM

    8/14/2008 7:59:42 PM
  • Out of the office, in the dirt, getting the real job done.
    8/14/2008 8:00:10 PM
  • He set in motion sniper training and has given a standard of excellence in his example as a Marine.
    8/14/2008 8:01:46 PM
  • All these are great men. But, I think Pappy Boyington would be my choice on the list above. But my true hero''s are my 2 son''s currently serving in the Corps. Semper Fi Melinda Deamer
    8/14/2008 8:01:54 PM
  • My Brothers...His 95 confirmed kills ...he saved alot of lives by killing those dinks. If he had not...How many Marines would have been killed?
    8/14/2008 8:02:41 PM
  • no fear, 2 medals of honor, tne naval cross, and the destinguished service cross, because of his lack of fear and motivation the nickname devil dogs was born. so i pick dan daily. but they are all amazing
    8/14/2008 8:03:30 PM
  • I''d like to vote for General James Mattis. His comments throughout his tours in Iraq are priceless! He''s my hero and is reflective of what Marines stand for today.
    8/14/2008 8:05:10 PM
  • As a former Sergeant of Marines and ''Nam Vet, I''d go to war with any of those men, but you gotta love SgtMaj Dan Daly''s attitude
    8/14/2008 8:06:53 PM
  • I have met Gen Gray twice, the 1st time when the MCL presented him with his Cabbage Patch Marine at the commandants residence in 1988; but Smedleys''CPM is in my living room.
    8/14/2008 8:08:09 PM

As far as MY Favorite Marine it would be former SSgt C.B. Chandler. We went through TeleComm Maintenance training together at MCCES, MCB 29 Palms, CA and again at MCTSSA, MCB Camp Pendleton, CA. • Lots of great choices but I have to vote for Sgt. Sanchez, my DI in June, 1966. My grandfather died during boot camp. There was an airline strike but Sgt. Sanchez got me on a flight. I was gone a week but he did not drop me from the platoon. No matter how tough he was on me, I realized he saw something in this recruit that I did not. Without his support I doubt I would have participated in Lt. Gen Krulak''s retirement honor guard, met Capt. Charles Krulak during a helicopter ride in 1969, met General of the Army Omar Bradley and retired a Marine.
    8/15/2008 8:20:29 AM

It is no mere coincidence that General Lejeune''s message is read at every 10 November Marine Corps Birthday celebration wherever Marines are gathered together. I have been a Marine since February 1947 when I enlisted in the USMCR while a junior in high school. I received a competitive appointment two years later to the U.S. Naval Academy, was commissioned a 2dLt upon graduation in 1953 and retired as a colonel in 1977. Although there are a few i''d vote for, my vote is for GySgt Basilone, a proud Italian-American, born and bred in Raritan, New Jersey. There is a parade every year in his honor, much deserved. • I have a cousin that should be mentioned as well, not a Marine but pretty damn close. Saved the lives of three Marines while under enemy machine gun fire "Wayne Maurice Caron" Hospital Corpsman 3rd Class H&S CO. 3RD BN 7TH MARINES 1ST MARDIV, USN. KIA 28 July 68 "CMH" in 77. Some of the younger Marines may know the clinic at LEJUENE is named after him and a Destroyer USS Caron DD 970. The President of the United States, in the name of The Congress takes pride in presenting the MEDAL OF HONOR posthumously to: HOSPITAL CORPSMAN THIRD CLASS WAYNE M. CARON UNITED STATES NAVY for service as set forth in the following CITATION: For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty on 28 July 1968 while serving as a Platoon Corpsman with Company K, 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st Marine Division during combat operations against enemy forces in the Republic of Vietnam. While on a sweep through an open rice field in Quang Nam Province, Petty Officer Caron''s unit started receiving enemy small-arms fire. Upon seeing two Marine casualties fall, he immediately ran forward to render first aid, but found that they were dead. At this time, the platoon was taken under intense small-arms and automatic weapons fire, sustaining additional casualties. As he moved to the aid of his wounded comrades, Petty Officer Caron was hit in the arm by enemy fire. Although knocked to the ground, he regained his feet and continued to the injured Marines. He rendered medical assistance to the first Marine he reached, who was grievously wounded, and undoubtedly was instrumental in saving a man''s life. Petty Officer Caron then ran toward the second wounded Marine, but was again hit by enemy fire, this time in the leg. Nonetheless, he crawled the remaining distance and provided medical assistance for this severely wounded man. Petty Officer Caron continued to make his way to yet another injured comrade, when he was again struck by enemy small-arms fire. Courageously and with unbelievable determination, Petty Officer Caron continued his attempt to reach the third Marine until he was killed by an enemy rocket round. His inspiring valor, steadfast determination, and selfless dedication to duty in the face of extreme danger, sustain and enhance the finest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life in the service of his country. /S/RICHARD M. NIXON

  • I was on the parade deck at Lejeune when Gen. Gray Became the 2nd Mar Div. commander. I was there again when he became the FMFLant commander. I''ll never forget When a few of us FMFLant NCO''s were in the tv. room of the barracks on Okinawa and heard that our pick made Commandant OOORAH. WE toasted with San Magil darks and Wild Turkey. Had Gen. Gray been there he would have toasted right along with us, that''s what kind of leader he is. I met the man twice while under his command as Lant Commander 2 years later I met him again as Commandant and he still remembered me. I''d serve under him anywhere anytime even through the very gates of hell. Semper Fi R.M. Sullivan Cpl. of Marines 84-88

He was in a workout jogging suit of some sort. He smiled and addressed us briefly but with a real feeling of sincerity. He made you feel like you wanted to do whatever it took to make him pleased with his recruits.

He was with the C Company, 1st Marine Division, 1st Raider Batallion in WW II, Guadalcanal. The comments my late grandfather, (Sgt Clarence Robitaille), stated about him was that he was a tough and honorable man. He kept the men motivated to complete their missions even in the worst of situations. Semper Fi! God bless all of our Marines!
