More DI Sayings
July 26, 2011
I am sure that everyone has heard it from time to time in The Corps but the most profound thing that I remember my SDI, GySgt Bruce E. Boltze saying to us was “The more you sweat in peace, the less you bleed in war". Gunny Boltze was promoted to CWO# and was shot down in an OV-10 Bronco over the South China Sea in 1971...his 3rd tour. Researching his accomplishments and medals, he was a Marine's Marine. Proud to have known him, even for only 8 weeks in 1969. …

Memorable DI Sayings
July 25, 2011
I still remember this today, over 40 years ago, "I can't make you do anything, but I can make you wish you had". Earl McDowell 04 March 66 to 03 Mar 69. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- To this day I still remember what one of my Drill Instructors told our platoon #207 in PI in January 1964; "No matter how tough it gets, it won't last forever. You can wait it out." During many tough times since then I have often thought of that phrase. The DI was right. No tough time goes …

So, how many Marines does it take to change a light bulb?
July 24, 2011
Remember, it is a joke, making fun of situations. So, how many Marines does it take to change a light bulb? Another possible title to this blog would have been: Why I Have to Get Out Before I'm Driven Insane. Here it is: Everyone asks about a typical day in the Marines. There really is no such thing, but I can tell you that every day I've spent in this …

American Thing To Do
July 23, 2011
Hey Sgt Grit... I was a young man fresh out of High School when I joined the Marine Corps in May 1963. I graduated on a Thursday and left for Boot Camp on Monday morning. I joined because I loved America and loved everything that it stood for then and stands for now. But, I joined to do my duty, as my father and grandfather had done in World War II and World War I. I did it because it was the American thing to do and I was an …

Son’s sleep restive
July 22, 2011
I'm glad your son was killed. So he was a good soldier, so what? So are many Viet Cong. If he had been a good person, he would have stayed home, gone to school and experienced the joys of youth, but he lacked the courage to stand up for humanity. He was a machine, not a man. ..." Forty years ago today - June 11, 1968 - Al Dewlen's life changed forever. It hurt him in ways that go even beyond the death of an only child. He felt bitterness, …

Obama OKs Medal of Honor for living Marine
July 21, 2011
A Marine who repeatedly braved enemy fire in eastern Afghanistan attempting to find and save fellow members of his embedded training team will receive the Medal of Honor, Marine Corps Times has confirmed. Dakota Meyer was contacted by President Obama on Monday, according to sources with knowledge of the award. He will be the first living Marine recipient of the nation’s highest award for valor since now-retired Sgt. Maj. Allan Kellogg received the medal for actions 41 years ago in Vietnam.
