I just read Noble Warrior and it seems anyone in the Dong Ha area paid more than their share of dues.  I’m glad you’re around to post the pic. Semper Fi!

I was in Dong Ha that Christmas. I was in an attached platoon (3rd Plt, 3rd Bridge Co) to 11th Engineers. The platoon sgt decided that it would be nice to have Christmas tree by the hooch.

The crew ‘selected’ to ‘provide’ one was made up of all ‘city’ people - they brought back a live tree and planted it outside the ‘hootch’: it soon died.

2 problems here -the first being that they knocked off the root ‘ball’ of dirt and planted it with bare roots and (2) a note came around that the general was really PO’d that the fir tree planted in front of his hootch was missing (I think it was Gen Krulak):
I never asked where the tree came from.

I was in that hooch when the picture was taken.  The Marine reading the book is Larry Nabb from Colorado and the Marine in the back ground is Gordon Murphy from Montana.  The picture was taken in Quang Tri and not Dong Ha.  3rd Marine Division Head Quarters Battalion Motor Transport.  The picture was in the Christmas edition of the Stars and Stripes.  Larry and I have stayed in touch and he has a copy of the 1968 edition of the Stars and Stripes with this picture.  I haven’t been able to locate Gordon in all these years.

I was there earlier in the year on an L.T.I. from Camp Hansen, Okinawa. We visited 2nd tracks from there. We were only there for two weeks, we were alot more fortunate than many others. I did/do appreciate the photograph though.

I was in Vietnam from Feb 68 to Mar of 69 and spent most of my tour in the Northern I corps with Dong Ha being our base camp. We were attached to the 3rd Marine Division. I was with Mass-2 ASRT team B I was wondering if anybody that was with us or knew us had any recollection of Xmas of 68 as I have none whatsoever. Thanks
    Have a Great 2012 Marines!
