Quonset Huts at MCRD San Diego
Don,
In the last issue of the Sgt Grit's Newsletter someone wrote incorrectly about the quantity of Quonset Huts at MCRD San Diego.
When the USMC Vietnam Tankers Association held our last reunion (Aug 2011) in San Diego, we attended a recruit graduation and afterward we toured the base.
One of our members (Glenn Hutchinson) had the photo taken at the "Memorial to the Old Corps" below...

Ptl 1013, January 1969, remember them well, on our way to the showers one night, the weather had turned chilly, rain with some hail that was left floating on the puddles like a skim of ice. We were in shower gear (shorts, t-shirt and flip-flops) freezing our tails off and the DI had us to march slow-time to the showers so we didn’t slip on the ice, thought it somewhat ironic, risk pnemonia or falling on the ice. I was from Indiana os the weather was spring-likt to me but the “southern” recruits were having a tough time…..funny what memories a picture brings back after 43 years…..

I looked at that photo and it brought back memories about Booy Camp 1n July 1953 at MCRD Sav Diego. Platoon 198 ,it has been a long time ago. I have not seen the area since Boot Camp. Thanks for showing it.

May it ever be humble there is no place like home and these were home for what seemed like a really long time back in 66’. In 1990 when I was visiting friend in San Diego, there was an open gate policy at MCRD ans I was very surprised to see the huts next to the parade ground, were I used to live, gone. There were many other suprises. The biggest one was the way the “Damn Idiots” were treating (Babying) the recruits.
Thanks to the “Old Corps” Marines for the comments about that whole oooooraahhh thing. I never heard it until I had been out of the Corps (1966-1969) for a long time, either.

OMG Ilived in those in third phase Sept. 1972 PLT 3084. My son is now down there in PLT 3222. Graduating April 6. I will have to see if they are still there and I can sneek-a-peek. Sure hope they let me set foot on our beloved “GRINDER”. ..I know it is sacred ground, but I bet my footprints are still on it.
I remember the night before graduation and we went to the showers, but on the way back someone (Gomer Pyle) stepped on our D.I’s beloved grass (sand) As you may remember the phrase “Make it rain” Hit the rack full of dirt and sand. The night BEFORE graduation…Bet they do not get treated like that nowadays.

I remember the quonset huts at MCRD in San Diego in July,1959. during Boot Camp Platoon 246. I wish I had taken pictures of the Grinder, the Quonset huts ,the confidence course, the Parade grounds and the rifle range at Camp Pendleton..
The great rifle was the M-1.
It brings back “FOND” MEMORIES.
Thanks,
