Sgt Grit,
I was on the Rockpile as 2531 mos radio operator with 3rd Recon in '67 I remember some of the Marines in this photo they were from an infantry unit stationed on Highway 9 the CO was a major with a Polish last name I can't remember. In the photo on the right the guy with arms raised is Alvarez, the three guys are Wheeler, Renard, and I can't remember the last guy's name? I maybe unloading water in the photo on the left. Doc Soul is not in the photo.
Neither are Pete Pizutt from Brooklyn, NY or, Joe Murphy from Pawtucket, RI, or Roger Brown from Bayou Le Battre, AL of 3rd Recon. Pete and Joe made it home but have since passed away, I don't know about Brown?
Thomas Curran

Love the photos of the Rockpile. Made many resupply trips as a 46 crew member. On occasion wind conditions were such that we had to hover with our ass over the LZ and Phrog leg in thin air. On one such trip the pilot thought all troops were off loaded and picked up early only to find a GySgt take a twenty foot fall breaking his leg. We recovered him and got him immediate aid.
I am sick about the liberal media coverage of Marine’s in Afghanistan so called “desecration’ of Taliban war dead. For some reason American fighting men are “above” that sort of thing. From one who knows; when you are young and scared and thankful to be alive and not beheaded or eviscerated by the enemy and had your dead body dragged through the dirty streets for all to spit, piss and shit on you just might feel it a bit cathartic to urinate on the dead enemy. From early reports the Taliban was not upset. But give the media enough time and they will make the Taliban and the rest of the world upset. An enemy who treats war dead as the Taliban does would be hypocritical to criticize the Marines for this small victory dance. So give us a fu….. break you bastards; leave our brave young fighting men alone to battle for your non-hacking chicken asses.
