- Bob Hope visits DaNang 1969
- Posted by William Gwin
Sgt Grit I saw your newsletter about going to the Bob Hope Show near DaNang in 1969. It was at Freedom Hill and I was there also. In fact I was a Squadron Photographer (First Marine Air Wing, MAG 11, VMA225 at the DaNang Airbase) and was sitting on the ground right in front of the stage. I took 600 pictures of the show and went again the next year to see his 1970 show and give him an album of the pictures I had taken the year before. Bob …

- My Banner
- Posted by Sgt Grit Staff
We were a home school family and home on 9-11-2001. My sons and I watched as the first tower burned. The news commentators speculated about the "accident". Then we watched as the second plane hit the second tower. That morning we watched the both World Trade Center Towers collapse. The boys were getting very excited, calling their scout friends, then the news switched to Washington, D.C. I, frankly, could not believe this, then word of a plane crashed in Pennsylvania. It would be some time before we …

- How do you describe freedom?
- Posted by romie maysA lot of people ask Veterans and service members the same question, how do you describe Freedom? Our answer is usually the same, the common “well, it means different things to different people.” Because most people do not look at it from our perspective, we really can’t tell you how we describe it. So, I thought that I would share it with you and maybe you will be able to see it from our point of view. First, you have to have a little back ground about our situation. Imagine, …

I'm writing you this in response to the American Courage letter I received on 10 December 2010, specifically, the section by Henry J Lewis about his father, CPL Elmer B Lewis who fought on Kwajalein with the 4th Marine Division's first wave. I and some fellow Marines who are working on Kwajalein today would like to show our appreciation to the Lewis family and our fellow Leatherneck. On 12 December 2010 we are going to gather all the Marines on base and fly the American flag at half mast at …

- 4th of July Poem - Birthday Tribute
- Posted by Sgt Grit StaffA Birthday Tribute To Our Nation Poem by By Bob Beskar Every time I see "Old Glory", I think of many things... But most of all our freedom, that so many died to bring! Though our Nation still is young, and suffers growing pains, the visions of our forefathers, still solidly remains. Their dreams are now reality, and their hopes the way we live, and the blood they shed for us, was the price they vowed to give. We've weathered many storms, and made some huge mistakes, But we strive …

- American Poem - Just A Common Soldier
- Posted by Sgt Grit StaffJust A Common Soldier By: A. Lawrence Vaincourt ©1985 He was getting old and paunchy and his hair was falling fast, And he sat around the Legion, telling stories of the past Of a war that he had fought in and the deeds that he had done, In his exploits with his buddies; they were heroes, every one. And tho' sometimes, to his neighbors, his tales became a joke, All his Legion buddies listened, for they knew whereof he spoke. But we'll hear his tales no longer for old Bill …

- Veterans Day Story
- Posted by Sgt Grit StaffSomebody Had To Do It Written by Lynn Johnston, Spring, TX 11/99 Just five insignificant words: Somebody had to do it. We use these words in various ways, such as when someone tells they take tour groups to Paris or sample Godiva chocolates for a living. "It's a job," they say, "and somebody's got to do it!" I remember my husband saying those words recently, after volunteering to lick the praline pot at a cooking school in New Orleans. "Somebody's got to do it," he announced, cracking a huge smile. …
