Marinettes
Posted by Sgt Grit Staff Marinettes taking their oath. Grit, I have attached a photo that I have of the first Women Marines taking their oath. At the time, they were designated "Marinettes".  On the back of the picture is their names and the Captains name performing the ceremony typed in red ink. Dated 1919. Are there any readers that has ever seen this particular picture? It was placed in the sunlight and I copied with my camera. H. McKinley, MSgt Retired 62-82  ---- Update Comment by Jerry D. referred the Women Marine's Association as a reference with some bad information …

WOMEN MARINES/USMC MOUNTED COLOR GUARD

I was married to a career Marine who was on the Color Guard and participated in the Rose Parade back in the mid 60's. We went to many parades and camped out with the horses - including making a "pit" toilet for ourselves and the girls. Our daughter Terri, who was barely 13 months old in 1965, walked beneath the stomachs of the horses ... and we held our breaths, but they …

WWII WMs and Honor Flights
Posted by Sgt Grit staff Cpl Annette Howards Sgt Grunt, Last month Honor Flight flew 97 aging but vibrant WWII Vets flew from Madison Wisconsin to Washington, DC. to visit the WWII Memorial and return home in a one day blitz. This flight set the record for the most female WWII Vets on any flight in the history of the program, and it was noted that a vast majority of those women were WMs, or as they were called back then, WRs. Proud to say that my 86 year old Momma, Corporal Annette Howards, USMCWR, was standing front …

Well here’s another WM Boot Camp picture
Posted by Sgt Grit staff Parris Island - Platoon 12-A - Nov 1965 Well, it has been many years since I became a Marine. I just thought that one of my four children would become a Marine, but only one has joined the service—the Air Force. Upon graduating as a Honor Graduate, another airman asked him how he did it. His answer floored me, but made me proud too. He said, “Do you think I could be anything but number one being raised by a Woman Marine”. He went on to graduate from Tech school as an Honor Graduate too. Anyway, thought I …
