Side by side with the Seabees on Iwo Jima
Posted by Sgt Grit Staff Joe Shawinsky In regards to other people wearing the "Eagle Globe & Anchor. In my opinion, other than Corpsmen, the unit I feel that "may" have been able to rate the "Eagle Globe & Anchor" are the Seabee battalions assigned "directly" to Marine Corps Engineer regiments (17th,18th,19th & 20th) during WW2. After Navy boot, these men were issued Marine uniforms, trained with Marines, and subject to Marine Corps rules and regulations, being directly absorbed into the Engineer Regiments. They were integral parts of the Marine assault shore-party landing and fighting operations in …

Liberty Card
Posted by Marion I served in the Corps 1942-1949.  I read about Liberty Cards being issued.  I don't remember ever being issued a Liberty Card.  At 86 years of age I may have forgotten, but I just don't remember.  Are there anymore old Marines out there who were never issued Liberty Cards?   Sgt. Marion B. Stults, USMC SN 450010

My dad a WWII Marine Corps veteran had the attached picture with his memorabilia that I came across after he passed in 1995. I never got a lot of information from him, but he was proud of the Corps and the team. I remember seeing the picture when I was young and he would laugh when he told us that most spectators thought they were prisoners. They even went as far as making up …

The Ballad of Ira Hayes
Posted by Sgt Grit Staff black and white photo of Ira Hayes Most Marines know “The Ballad of Ira Hayes,” written by folk singer Peter La Farge. It tells the story of Ira Hayes, who was one of five Marines and a Navy corpsman who became famous for having raised the flag Feb. 23, 1945, over Mount Suribachi during the Battle of Iwo Jima. The song has been recorded many times, but by far, the most popular version is by the late Johnny Cash (video below), recorded in 1965.
Info on the 5th Amphibious Recon in WWII
Posted by Jon Culley I am looking for any information about the 5th Amphibious Recon that served on Guadalcanal in WWII.  My Dad, DJ Culley, Cpl., Fb,2nd BN,11th MAR, passed and had a 5th Unit Patch in his possesion. I'm awaiting his DD214 for possible info, but would like to hear from anyone that has more. It's unknown if he was detached to the 5th or if he obtained the patch from a buddy. All info is greatly appreciated. JB Culley
Dobermans in WWII
Posted by Sgt Grit Staff SSgt Burdoin and his black and brown Doberman, Baron Sgt Grit,   I think a USMC Tee-Shirt with Doberman's recognized as the real USMC War Dog/ "Devildogs" would be appropriate. See attached:   http://www.doberman.ws/ww2.php   Admittedly the English Bulldog is the USMC Mascot but the Doberman was the real hero in many WW II campaigns, he was a fighter. I have had eight Doberman's and my current Marine, Baron, is 32.5" to the withers and 112 pounds of protection and companionship. SSGT Robert Burdoin, USMC ('52-'55)
