Through the Night
For the Marines slain near Khafji on January 29, 1991:
Lance Cpl. Frank Allen, Cpl. Stephen Bentzlin, Cpl. Ismael Cotto Jr.,
Lance Cpl. Thomas Jenkins, Lance Cpl. Michael Linderman Jr.,
Lance Cpl. James Lumpkins, Sgt. Garett Mongrella, Pfc. Scott Schroeder,
Lance Cpl. David Snyder, Pfc. Dion Stephenson, and Lance Cpl. Daniel B. Walker
I. The toll
"Light losses" near Khafji, II. The never-ending night
Am I now a builder
Can't help but wonder
So we stalk the enemy,
Chills climb my spine,
I clutch at my rifle,
As our hearse keeps moving, III. What if
What? "Yea, sarge? Right."
My thoughts race
Attempt a deep breath,
"Dear Jesus!" |
I look for a window
But instead, in the pall, IV. Heart-seeking missile
Not checking, nor seeking
Through the firmament
Drawn to hearts full of longing,
Worlds within worlds,
T-shirts, cologne, V. Forever
To those who still love us
But we followed our flag,
Still we followed the banner,
Slain Marines and Iraqis —
