Vet_Chew Chewy, a Vietnam veteran who spends time in West Virginia and Washington state, props up a flag at the base of The Moving Wall on Sunday. He declined to give his last name. The wall carries the names of more than 58,000 men and women killed or listed as missing in action during Vietnam.
(Herald/Richard Dickin)

Sunday, 3:10 p.m.

A veteran wearing a "Brothers of the Wheel" motorcycle club jacket with several patches including one that read "Nomad" knelt in front of The Wall pushing a small American flag into the ground so it would not fall. He then fell silent and his eyes settled on the black panels.

Commandant of the Marine Corps

We had the honor of shaking hands with the Commandant of the Marine Corps, General Michael W. Hagee this past Saturday at the Army/Navy Game. The General was kind enough to stand with the troops for a picture. Would you place this in your "Other" photo category for display.

Thanking you in advance.

hopkins2My husband passed away in September but God had given us 45 beautiful years together 30 of them we shared with the Corps. We also shared our oldest son along with my husbands brother and my nephew. Yes we are a proud Marine family. Here is a poem I wrote for him. I wanted to share it with you as I am used to sharing with the Corps. Semper Fi

halstead1 halstead2 It is interesting to read the letters of our fellow Marines of the different eras. Regarding "Name Tapes" - as a member of Platoon 130, MCRD S Diego the summer of 1961. We were issued a rubber stamp kit with pad and our names were rubber stamped on our utility blouse [first initial, middle initial, last name] immediately above the left breast pocket as well as all of the rest of our issue, in less conspicuous places, at the beginning of our basic training.

Because I'm old, and the memory is not always as trust worthy as it once was, I verified this with a photo of myself in the utility uniform which was taken at that time. Our blouse was issued with the EGA and USMC already stamped on the left breast pocket. Then when we arrived on Okinawa, we were able to buy the embroidery name tags for our fatigues.

So those who think it is an ARMY THING...not so brother! The name tags were also worn on our field jacket as well. For those who think the Marines should discontinue the name tags because it looks like the Marine are trying to "fit in" - that has never been a problem...we have always been set aside, not just because we are a squared away group...but because we are unmistakably MARINES.

Peace Treaty Signing

Ohhrrahh A group of Marines, their wives and some friends took 12 military vehicles to Huntington West VA the weekend of July 24, 25, 26 for the 50th Anniversary of the peace treaty signing that ended the Korean War. Many marines and their wives and friends asked us where we got our apparel. We must have told 20 people that day about www.grunt.com

COVERED IN GLORY

DCP_0001

Last Sunday night my wife and I were the guests of SFC and Mrs. Lewis (see below). We went to a welcome back dinner/dance for Dave's National Guard unit that went to Bosnia not too long ago. It was held at the Aqua Turf (very nice) in Southington, CT. "Blues, service uniform or equivalent evening attire" were the acceptable modes of dress. Naturally, yours truly was in his Marine Corps Dress Blues and, as I caused quite a stir, I was in my glory. There were a good many officers including a Brigadier General and 95% of the enlisted were Senior NCOs. I must admit, even under Marine Corps standards, the entire group represented themselves rather well. They all had at least regulation haircuts -most were "high 'n tight" - and most wore their Army Blues.

I got a Semper Fi from a formerly-active Marine who's now in the Guard. At one point a Major came over to me, introduced himself and asked what rank I was. After my explanation, he asked if I could come over to meet his wife so she could see my Purple Heart. Ha! I've never had a request like that before - especially from a Major. Much later, the wife of another (different) Major blurted out in the middle of our conversation with a Sgt Major and his wife, "Well, I don't care what anybody says, the Marines have the best uniforms." With drink in hand I thanked her and tried to look humble and gracious. Then the two wives went down the list of all the times they saw Marines in Dress Blues. Damn! Yes, I was definitely covered in glory. Well, that's enough BS for now. :)

CPL Rader

theamegos I have been searching through your web site a few years before I even went into the Marine Corps. I must say that your web site truly does build morale through the unit with your jokes, stories and everything else you have on that site. My personal favorite story was about the boy who did a research on the Marine Corps and the entire history of the greatest group of people ever created.

I have sent you a pic of two of my fellow NCOs and myself. I am the one to the far left. I have no reason for sending the picture; I just wanted to give you something in return of your awesome web site that you have created.

Got a chance back in 1963 while stationed at Henderson Hall to meet Lou Lowery. He was kind enough to give me a autohgraphed copy of his famous picture. For years I never realized what a treasure I had. I have given copies to many former and active Marines and friends. It's a shame he never got the real credit for taken the First picture on Iwo Jima. This the first time I've read your newsletter but am enjoying it very much. Plan on sending copies to sons and friends. Keep up the good work. Semper Fi

Barr-Nunn Transportation

marines2 marines1

Barr-Nunn Transportation And The United States Marine Corps Team Up with Trailer Advertising GRANGER, IOWA - On any given day up to 180 million drivers take to the 4 million miles of roads, avenues and interstates spread across the United States. So why did the United States Marine Corps approach Barr-Nunn Transportation to spearhead their "1,000 Trucks" marketing campaign? "Several of Barr-Nunn's top executives are former Marines, so we all wanted that partnership to work," said Captain C. Derek Campbell, Marketing Operations Officer, Marine Corps Recruiting Command. "Basically, what we're trying to do is bring about public awareness about the Marine Corps. Barr-Nunn is helping us carry that message."

The program is designed to provide the Marine Corps a low cost alternative to standard billboards that will extend the reach of the recruiting message. The program wraps three sides of the Barr-Nunn trailers and is already having an impact. "The other truckers going by honk their horns and give me a thumbs-up! A lot of them are former Marines, I hear it over the C.B. radio," said John Peterman, a driver with Barr-Nunn. "Drivers will pass me on one side, then slow down and pass on the other side just to see the whole truck."

"We're very excited about the program," said Retired Marine Corps Gunnery Sergeant and Barr-Nunn Recruiting Director Doug Albrecht. "There are a number of similarities between the way the Marines operate and the way Barr-Nunn operates. Integrity, dedication, and hard work...they are all words that both organizations take very seriously. Bob Sturgeon, (Barr-Nunn President & CEO) takes a lot of pride in his Marine Corps background, and obviously in our organization, so this was a natural fit." Peterman summed up the feelings of a lot of people. "I'm not a Marine, I was in the Air Force, but to haul this trailer gives me a lot of pride, it feels great, it feels patriotic."

Col Dave Shoup is on the left. That belt around his waist is actually a life belt we all wore aboard the troop transports enroute to invasion. Major Jim Crowe is on the right and that pouch is a map case. Col Shoup was awarded the CMH for action on Tarawa. Looking through my "archives" I came across several other photos I thought you might like to see, sort of a bonus. There is a photo of a Jap submarine recovered at Pearl after the attack. Also the entire Jap Sub crew taken before their mission. These were two-man submarines. A good friend in nearby Manchester was a crew member of the USS Ward that sunk one of these subs a couple of days before the attack. Also a photo of my Recruiting days in a l917 Fiat automobile. Our living quarters at New River before it was called Camp Lejeune, The USS Arizona just after the attack and the Jap surrender aboard the USS Missouri. Our Second Division tent area in New Zealand just before Tarawa. Miscellaneous Saipan and Okinawa battlefield photos. Always nice to communicate with my favorite people.......... MARINES.

THE FLAG

flag Red, White and Blue are the colors.
So big and bright it flys
Between the two fire engines.
It moves with grace so far.
Watching the men so proud
They raise the flag with a frown.
For one of their men has fallen a hero.
Knowing he will never be fogetten,
His family will be taken care of thats for sure.
For he goes to heaven were he is safe
With all God's love and grace.
