Important Message for Newsletter Subscribers
It has come to our attention that you may not be receiving the weekly Sgt Grit Newsletters.
Our weekly newsletter is made up of stories by YOU, the subscriber. We do little, if any, editing of these stories, which often causes our email to be qualified as SPAM. The fact that we send this out to tens of thousands of Marines and their family members each week also contributes to this issue. What does this mean?? The newsletter could be unreadable, moved to your bulk/junk mail folder, or blocked completely!
We have listed the most common problems you are having below and possible solutions:
Problem:
I am not receiving the newsletter at all!
Solutions:
- **MOST EFFECTIVE** Add info@sgtgritnews.com and news@sgtgritnews.com to your address book or list of allowed senders. (This helps your email server know that this is something you want to receive.)
- Check your bulk mail / junk mail folder. It may have been redirected there by your mail program. . (Get details) If for some reason it is in there, there should be a button to click that says "This is not Spam". Please select this.
- If you are using a business address, it is possible that your company has increased the strictness of its email filters. Try subscribing with a personal email address instead.
- If these solutions do not work and you continue missing the newsletter you may need to contact your service provider to see if they have blocked our IP address from reaching your inbox. Our IP address is 66.210.181.137.
Problem:
I am receiving the newsletter sometimes, but not other times.
Solution:
**MOST EFFECTIVE** Add info@sgtgritnews.com and news@sgtgritnews.com to your address book or list of allowed senders. (This helps your email server know that this is something you want to receive.) Because the content of our newsletter varies so greatly from week to week, it could be a filter is blocking such content.
Problem:
I open my email and all I get is a blank screen.
Solution:
You are most likely subscribed to receive an HTML version of our newsletter and your email provider cannot accept or render HTML very well. You will need to change your subscription to the TEXT version. Just email web@grunt.com and I'll update your subscription.
What Next:
If you are still unable to receive the newsletter after following the steps above or have other questions that are not addressed on this page please let me know so I can work on figuring out another solution. Forward your reply to: web@grunt.com.
You can view missed newsletters in our archives - new issues are available immediately.
Details on different ISPs:
Different ISPs - for example, AOL, Hotmail, and Yahoo — differ in the way they treat spam or junk mail. See below for examples of where to look for your missing messages. (If anyone knows of a different way - please notify us web@grunt.com)
America Online: If you have AOL 9.0 Enhanced, images and links in e-mail are disabled by default unless you add the sender to your address book. You can enable them, but it requires an extra step unless you follow these directions. In addition, AOL's adaptive spam filters could, over time, mistakenly delete our messages. To ensure delivery of Sgt Grit and AmericanCourage Newsletters, simply go to keyword "address book" and put news@sgtgritnews.com and info@sgtgritnews.com in an e-mail address field in your address book. Further Steps for AOL users.
MSN Hotmail: Select "Options" and then "Junk E-mail Protection" and add news@sgtgritnews.com and info@sgtgritnews.com to your Safe List.
Yahoo Mail: If spam is not a problem for you, you may want to turn off SpamGuard under Mail Options. If you use SpamGuard, check your bulk mail folder regularly to ensure important messages are not mistakenly filtered. Click the "addresses" button, then select "Add Contact" and save news@sgtgritnews.com and info@sgtgritnews.com to your contacts list.
Other ISPs: Some ISPs enable spam filters that you can turn off or update to your preferences. Check your ISP's Web site or contact their technical support team if you believe you are missing messages from us or any other e-mail subscriptions.
Other Email Software: Check your email software options or settings screen to see if you can add news@sgtgritnews.com and info@sgtgritnews.com to a "white list" or "safe list" of senders that are never filtered. Alternatively, there may be a folder where suspected spam is moved. You should check there regularly to ensure important messages are not mistakenly filtered.

EDIT MAIL CONTROLS SETTINGS
NOTE: Please sign on with the Master Screen Name to check the Mail Controls (please see the note below about Screen Names). To unblock screen names or e-mail addresses that you have blocked on your Mail Controls, please follow the steps below:
NOTE: You need to be signed on to a Master Screen Name or a Screen Name on a General Access category to adjust the Mail Controls. A Master Screen Name is the first screen name you created for this account and any screen name you have assigned Master Screen Name status at AOL Keyword: Names.
- On the AOL toolbar, click the MAIL menu, then click MAIL CONTROLS. You can also go to AOL Keyword: Spam Controls.
- Select the Screen Name you wish to adjust from the drop-menu at the top of the Mail and Spam Controls window. For Screen Names on a General Access category, you can only adjust the Mail Controls for that screen name itself.
- Click CUSTOM SENDER LIST link.
- Select for the screen name or e-mail address that you would like to unblock on the list of e-mail addresses you have blocked, then click REMOVE.
- Click SAVE.
- Click SAVE on the Mail and Spam Controls window.
Also, on the mail control window, please uncheck the box for "MAIL FILTERED BY AOL'S ADVANCED SPAM FILTER. Click on the AOL'S ADVANCED SPAM FILTER and then click on CLEAR FILTER. Click on CLOSE.
These steps should help make sure you receive the Newsletter. Although you will receive the newsletter, it may still be too large for AOL servers to forward and AOL may still cut it and convert it to a downloadable file. We are working on a new format that will make our newsletter much smaller so everyone can receive the whole letter. In the mean time if you do not wish to download the file, you can go directly to the website to view all newsletters. This link will be on the top of the newsletter each week for your convenience.
