These chat rooms can only be used if you have Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 or above or Netscape 4.0 or above. If you are a Mac user, you will need to use Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.5. Other browsers probably will fail.
You must have Java enabled on your browser. If you see only a gray box, you do not have Java enabled.
In Microsoft Internet Explorer, go to the top of your screen and select "Tools", then "Internet Options", then the "Advanced" tab. Scroll down through all of the boxes until you reach "Microsoft VM". There will be 3 boxes underneath referring to Java. All 3 boxes must be checked. IF YOU DO NOT HAVE THIS LISTED - go to the next paragraph. Otherwise, click OK and it will take you out of the toolbox. You will then have to reboot your computer for it to take effect. When you go back to the chatroom, you will then see the Java Chat Box.
To install Java onto your computer click on this link: http://www.java.com/en/download/download_the_latest.jsp and install the latest version.
In Netscape, a box will automatically pop up with the words, "Java applet from JPilot Software Company is requesting additional privileges". Access is required and there is no risk involved in this program. You must grant permission (and check the box too that says, "Remember this decision")
Step by Step Instruction
1. Select your chat room and click on the link to start the Chat.
2. A security window box will pop up and ask, "Do you want to install and run JIRC applet . . . ?"
You must click yes and grant permission or the chat will not work. If you also check the
box that asks if you want to trust Jpilot from now on, you will not see the pop up again.
Otherwise it will appear each time you participate in a chat . If any other boxes pop up
and ask anything, you must click yes.
3. WAIT. It takes a while (usually several minutes) to load the first time.
4. Next, a window will come up asking you for a nickname and an email address.
Leave the form box alone that says "Join Channel".
5. Click on the "connect" button, and wait.
6. You will automatically be taken into the chat room you select.
7. In the event there is not a place to type anything, move your cursor along the
edge of the window until it turns into a double-headed arrow. Click and hold the
left mouse button and drag it to make the window larger, or simply click on the
center box in the upper right corner to maximize the window. (Windows 95 & 98 users)
8. When there is a guest expert in the chat room, please wait for the moderator
to introduce the guest and begin the chat.
9. Enjoy
