1st Radio Battalion Vietnam Reunion

1st Radio Battalion Vietnam Reunion

At one time, these ‘young’ Marines were all members of 1st Radio Battalion, most served in either Kaneohe Bay or Vietnam or both.

We just finished our 2016 1st Radio Battalion Reunion in San Diego, and a great time was had by all. Of course, we visited MCRD San Diego.

We will be having our 2017 Reunion on the East Coast and another Radio Battalion Cruise is in ‘the works’.

Its been so long. Went to Vietnam Aug 3rd 1967. Went to Khe Sanh from hill 327. After a few months, sent to Camp Carroll. CO Gray promoted me to Sgt. After a few months, I was sent to Dong Ha. On to C1. Back to Dong Ha. Ammo dump blown up. Rockets hit the bunker I was in. Another day, hootch hit by rocket. Sadly, I can see faces, but not remember Names.

I joined 1 RAD in August 63, one month before name changed from 1st Composite Radio Company to 1st Radio Company. Deployed to Phu Bai January 64 as Detachment Alfa, and 1st Radio Co became 1st Radio Bn while we were deployed. Det Alfa returned to Kaneohe piecemeal in Apr/May 64. Maj. Gray (I thought he was already a major by then) had our relief detachment deployed with the reinforced platoon mentioned by Marion Wright to Khe Sanh for about 2-3 weeks, with the other part of the detachment in Danang. Gray actually mentions this, although without referencing what they were doing, in a book called Valley of Decision. I went back to K-Bay in late May, then back to Phu Bai in Jan/Feb 65 as part of Co. “L” MarSptBn for the full tour, along with several other members of the former Detachment Alfa. 1 RAD deployed other subunits to various locations with the 9th MEF, and we connected with a few of them around Phu Bai.

I was with 1st radio at KMCAS from 11/70 – 8/72, sub-unit 2 until the full battalion returned from Vietnam. I was a 2577/2571, but the ops unit wasn’t really doing anything other than PMing equipment, so when the equipment started coming back from Vietnam it was in terrible shape and they discovered I had an associate degree in electronics engineering technology, so they reassigned me to EM for the duration of my tour. I was in a small contingent deployed to Danang during the Easter Offensive in ‘72.

My first tour in Vietnam was in May 1965 I deployed the two 1st ANGLICO Shore Fire Control Parties and after about five days we also were administratively attached to Naval Advisory Team One at Danang ,and Operational Control to COMUSMACV in Saigon. I also served under General A.M. Gray when he was the G-3 of 2nd MARDIV and bumped into him many times the last on Christmas 1990 in Saudi Arabia when he was CMC

I was also a young man during my tours in Vietnam and my only contact with 1st Radio Battalion was when a Marine would come into the FSCC potion of the COC with nothing more then a grid coordinate and tell me if you fire on this grid you will get something, and I could not just send a grid to a firing unit and expect them to respond without target information. Maybe we all learned a little bit more since then. Hope you had a great reunion and many more.

Fulton (Rick) Loftis - July 7, 2020

Kinda late responding, but I was with you there from 76 throug 78. Still remember you, also. Hope you are well acclimated in the civilian world.
