Dad’s Poem

Dad’s Poem
by Larry Moist

IT WAS A TIME WHEN THE CLAXONS OF WAR WERE SOUNDING
AND HIS COUNTRY WAS CALLING,
THAT THIS YOUNG BOY FROM OKLAHOMA TOOK UP ARMS AND BOARDED THAT TRAIN.
TO THE PACIFIC HE WENT, SURROUNDED BY WAR.
IT WAS HIS VALUES AND OLD WAYS GIVEN TO HIM AS A YOUNG BOY,
THAT FORGED THE YOUNG MAN HE BECAME.

THEN CAME THE TIME THE DRUMS OF WAR BEAT NO LONGER,
AND THE BELLS IN THE STEEPLES RANG OUT.

IT WAS INEVITABLE WITH VALUES FORGED FROM THE STEEL OF SHIPS
THAT HE BROUGHT INTO THIS WORLD A FAMILY,
A SON AND TWO DAUGHTERS.

THE YEARS HAVE PASSED BUT THE OLD WAYS AND VALUES REMAIN.
WHEN LIFE WAS UNFAIR FOR A LITTLE BOY,
THERE STOOD THIS GENTLE MAN TO PROVIDE A HOME.
A HOME WITH VALUES AND LOVE.

NOW HIS SON HAS HEARD THE CALLING OF THE DRUMS OF WAR,
AND WITH HONOR AND COURAGE, THE VALUES LEARNED AND SOME OF THE OLD WAYS,
HE LEAVES HOME.

THIS I KNOW TO BE TRUE, FOR I HAVE BEEN BLESSED TO KNOW THIS GENTLE MAN.
