Infantry Song

Sgt. Grit I am writing to you in hopes that you can help me. I would like to have a copy of the words to the infantry song chesty puller was a merry old soul. Its a infantry song that was sang to the nursery rhyme of old king cole,. We use to sing it back in 1991 when I was with the 3rd Marine Regiment, 1st. meb kaneheo bay hawaii . Any help you can give me with this would be greatly appreciated. I try to sing this to my 6 yr. old when he goes to bed. I’m not sure if its right though. Thank you in advance for your help.

Sgt. Robert Norton, USMC 1980-1993

This is the verse that I am familiar with, there may be more and there maybe slightly different versions. Gunny D

Chesty Puller was a fine Marine
And a fine Marine was he.
He called for his pipe,
He called for his bowl,
He called for his privates three.
“Beer, beer, beer,” said the privates.
“Merry old men are we.
There’s nothing so fair that it can compare to Marine Corps infantry”

I was at Kaneohe Bay MCAS 1st Bat 4th Mar Reg 1960-62, and we sang it as well. Everywhere I heard it, whether Hawaii or Geiger or Pendleton it was always a little different.

I always heard it sung as "the Leatherneck infantry, And there were different words depebding on what rank was yours. Fun to sing it anyway.

Beer, beer, beer said the private
Hup to hup to hup said the corporal
Get that man in step said the sergeant
That’s a crock of shit said the Gunny
Who’s gonna read my map said theLouie
Who’s gonna drive my Jeep said the Capt
Who’s gonna marry my daughter said the Col
BEER, BEER, BEER said the General

This is the way that I learned it…B 1/5 Wpns Plt 85-88

Chesty Puller was a fine Marine and a fine Marine was he,
And he called for wife and he called for his pipe
And he called for his Privates three.
Beer, beer, beer said the Privates
That is what we need
The Army’s fair but it can’t compare to Marine Corps Infantry.

Then as others have said, he calls for a higher rank and after they answer then the lower rank answers. So after the Cpls the Privates, then after the Sgts, the Cpls then Privates and so on.

Cpls – Women, women, women said the Cpls.
Sgts – Get those troops in step said the Sgts.
Gunnys – That’s a crock of shit said the Gunnys.
Louies – We do all the work said the Louies.
Captains – How do I read this map said the Captains.

So the last verse would go…

Chesty Puller was a fine Marine and a fine Marine was he,
And he called for wife and he called for his pipe
And he called for his Captains three.
How do I read this map said the Captains
We do all the work said the Louies
That’s a crock of shit said the Gunnys
Get those troops in step said the Sgts
Women, women, women said the Cpls
Beer, beer, beer said the Privates
That is what we need
The Army’s fair but it can’t compare to Marine Corps Infantry.

Here’s how we sang it: “CHESTY PULLER WAS A GOOD MARINE AND A GOOD MARINE WAS HE. HE CALLED FOR HIS CHAIR AND HE CALLED FOR HIS PIPE AND HE CALLED FOR HIS PRIVATES THREE. BEER, BEER BEER SAID THE PRIVATES, SUCH MERRY OLD MEN ARE WE, WELL THERES NONE SO FAIR THAT THEY CAN COMPARE TO THE MARINE CORPS INFANTRY” Then it went on with Chesty calling up each rank with “HUP ONE HUP TWO SAID THE CORPORALS”, “WAR, WAR, WAR SAID THE SERGEANTS”, “HOW BOUT A THREE DAY PASS SAID THE GUNNYS”, “WHERE IS THE MAP SAID THE LOUIE” sorry but this formatting won’t let me create a new line.

I was stationed at KMCAS also in ‘67-‘68, but never had the opportunity to hear this catchy tune. After my tour in Vietnam, I was assigned to Barbers Point, but didn’t have the security clearance needed for my duty, so was assigned to Kaneohe Bay!:-). Semper Fi………….Sgt. Al Scott. ‘64’-‘70
