Infantry Song

Infantry Song

Sgt. Grit I am writing to you in hopes that you can help me. I would like to have a copy of the words to the infantry song chesty puller was a merry old soul. Its a infantry song that was sang to the nursery rhyme of old king cole,. We use to sing it back in 1991 when I was with the 3rd Marine Regiment, 1st. meb kaneheo bay hawaii . Any help you can give me with this would be greatly appreciated. I try to sing this to my 6 yr. old when he goes to bed. I’m not sure if its right though. Thank you in advance for your help.

Sgt. Robert Norton, USMC 1980-1993

This is the verse that I am familiar with, there may be more and there maybe slightly different versions. Gunny D

Chesty Puller was a fine Marine
And a fine Marine was he.
He called for his pipe,
He called for his bowl,
He called for his privates three.
“Beer, beer, beer,” said the privates.
“Merry old men are we.
There’s nothing so fair that it can compare to Marine Corps infantry”

Yep the way we sung it in 81 was about the Army too. Along with “the prettiest girl I ever saw was sipping bourbon through a straw” went down hill from there pretty fast! All time favorite was crushing the birds head,,,I actually heard the PC animal activists raised cane and the Corps caved and quit singing it as a cadence!!!

Not being a grunt, we sang the Mickey Mouse Club theme song in the mess hall kitchen when on mess duty awaiting Instruction for Basic Electronic School at MCRD San Diego, 1963.

Sorry, can’t help you on this one, the songs we sang, back in the day, would not be appropriate for bed time, unless you want to scar your children for life ! Our’s had something to do with an Eskimo woman, as I recall.

” He was born in a shelter half at Camp Lejuene; He eats his C rats with a plastic spoon; His Father was a gunny; His Mother was a Bamm; His sister sleeps with members of the Marine Corps band! Lifer, motorscooter, Lifer won’t you kiss my ass!

George Cipollone - April 29, 2020

79-80 We sang that tune a little differently….Chesty Puller was a merry old soul….And a merry old soul was he. Instead of “There’s nothing so fair”….We sang “The Army is fair but they can’t compare….To the Marine Corps Infantry”!
