MARINE CORPS BIRTHDAY RUN BEGINS WEEK OF CELEBRATIONS

MARINE CORPS BIRTHDAY RUN BEGINS WEEK OF CELEBRATIONS

Commandant of the Marine Corps Gen. David H. Berger and Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps Troy E. Black led a motivational run on Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall, Nov. 5. The run was held in celebration of the Marine Corps’ upcoming 244th birthday.

The Marines ran from Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall to the Marine Corps War Memorial where Berger and Black shared some motivation with the Marines.

The run began a week of celebration leading up to the birthday on Sunday.

“Having one day to celebrate the birthday is not good enough,” said the commandant. “We have to have a whole week.”

Berger then asked Marines to do three things this week. First, to stop and remember all those that have come before them. Second, to celebrate with their Marine Corps family. Finally, to look ahead at where they are going, because the Corps exists to fight and to win.

After the run, there was a moment of silence to honor all those who are forward deployed and all those that have come before them, as well as one final loud war cry that echoed across the base.

On Oct 27 I completed the 44 MCM, every Marine I came across was a squared away representative of the finest Military force in the world. On Oct 28 I walked around the Marine Barracks at 8 & I. Again, every Marine was sharp and extremely polite. Proud to be a Marine veteran.

Semper Fi!

In years past, and hopefully future years, it would be my pleasure to be in the nation’s capital with my brothers of 2nd Battalion/9th Marine Regiment to join in reunion, remembrance and celebration of the U.S. Marine Corps birthday. But this year the cardiologist and pulmonologist say I have to stay close to home and nurse my tired body. However, I will attend a concert of patriotic music in celebration of Veterans Day put on by the Broken Arrow OK Military Museum and Tulsa Community Band. I’m certain that I’ll reacquaint with many Marines whom I have not seen in years. Last Tuesday I was in Stillwater OK to attend a similar concert by the Stillwater Community Band, when I was approached by a lady who asked if I had ever been assigned to recruiting duty in Hartford CT. Turns out to be a Woman Marine whom I had recruited into the Marine Officer Programs from University of Connecticut in 1981. It really is a small world. Here’s to you, and to our Corps… Semper Fi!!!
