Veterans Stand Down

Sgt Grit continues to make generous product donations year round to other Marine Corps organizations, groups, and causes in order to assist them with raising funds to help and boost the morale of our Marine brothers and sisters. But, it is through the generosity of our customers that Sgt Grit has been able to give monetary donations to such organizations as Semper Fi Fund, Fisher House Foundation, and many more.  Last week we attended Oklahoma’s Veterans Stand Down at the Cox Convention Center hosted by the VA in collaboration with the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes of Oklahoma to help raise awareness of our homeless Veterans and help provide services and show our thanks, love, and appreciation to our Veterans for what they have done for this country.  Local vendors were out in full force to contribute and offer numerous kinds of services for various Veteran’s needs. We were proud to once again be able to help and be a part of our local community. Veterans were able to come in and receive wellness checks, flu shots, haircuts, and behavioral health services, all the way to giving out Danner boots, clothing, gloves, and of course Sgt Grit swag all at no cost to the Veteran! Food was catered in by Swadley’s to make sure each Veteran left with a full belly.  Thank you for your service and Welcome Home Marines!

The original Stand Down for homeless veterans was modeled after the Stand Down concept used during the Vietnam War to provide a safe retreat for units returning from combat operations. At secure base camp areas, troops were able to take care of personal hygiene, get clean uniforms, enjoy warm meals, receive medical and dental care, mail and receive letters, and enjoy the camaraderie of friends in a safe environment. Stand Down afforded battle-weary warriors the opportunity to renew their spirit, health and overall sense of well-being.

That is the purpose of the Stand Down for homeless veterans, and achieving those objectives requires a wide range of support services and time. The program is successful because it brings these services to one location, making them more accessible to homeless veterans. Yep, the new format for the newsletter sux no end. Fewer stories and the format leaves a lot to be desired. I’m thinking you need to go back to the previous editor for the newsletter. This one ain’t cuttin’ it.

We love the sgt grit newsletter but this new format is not printable. We have several retired veterans that do not have a computer that we always printed a copy for. Will you be working on a printable version. They are very disappointed and ask all the time for the newsletter as they have read it for years. Your help would be appreciated. Thank you very much.

Your company seems to be doing our marines a great service.we just had a Veterans Day celebration for our vets and it was a great success thanks to the staff and volunteersi was helping a young marine and noticed he was wearing a us navy hoodie .i asked why the navy shirt and he said that’s all he had.that killed me.upon further investigation I found that there is very little available for our marines in our donated clothing outlet. Our vets center center is just outside of spring city,pa. southeastern. Veteran center our vet volunteer coordinator is April Harley who loves all our vets.we try and take good care of all our vets.if you have any kind of program to donate light outer garments with our marine name or insignia on the items they would be appreciated
