The best rifle in the Corps

By: David Carriker

I’ve long known of the eternal discussion of the Springfield, M-1, M-14 and finally the M-16. Depending on the age of the Marine, each of these rifles has its supporters. I qualified Expert on the M-1, M-14, and the early M-16.

I personally lean toward the M-14 over the M-1 because of the increased capacity for rounds. The M-14 was a very robust design that was fairly easy to maintain.

And finally, it was the end of an era in the Corps when extreme accuracy was the goal. You could easily hit a man sized target at 500 yards. Try that with an M-16.

For the last 40 years or so, the concept of battle was no longer accuracy but rather volume of fire. This was the intended use of the M-16. As a very old Marine I find this deplorable.

The old phrase “one shot, one kill” was not originally used by snipers. In my day, every Marine believed in that motto and we all strove to emulate. Today’s Marines and soldiers are taught to blow the crap out of anything that moves.

Which is better? We’ll never agree!

M-16 all about the money, in colonel Hackworth’s book when they were talking about adopting M-16 he was on staff duty at the pentagon and he said it was no good, he was told to shut the blank up and by stock in Colt.

I prefer the M-14 for the simple reason that my TO weapon as a helicopter door gunner was the M-60. Tons and tons of 7.62 ammo available for the M-14. To this day, for the life of me, I cannot figure out who was thinking what, or even if they were thinking, when they took my -14 as secondary weapon and gave me the -16, and required me to carry 10 magazines of ammo that could only be used with it.

Best weapon is as good as the person behind it I have carry all three of the weapons and I have qualified with two of them the m-1 feel good in the off hand and the prone, but the m-14 with the box magazine of 20 rounds and it is easier to load and faster and you could get a full auto if you want to just spray the area and carry more rounds then you may like the m-16. I just like both the m-1 and the m-14 just one old Marine MSgt

Maybe, but what fun that would be! Nick0311

The BAR would be my choice, maybe, never fired one. Harry

I agree. M-14 is my choice if the Corps (ever) comes and drags me back to active duty (a joke, relax).

I have been for 52 years trying to make myself like the M-16 (AR) style rifles. Still hasn’t happened. The M-14 was/is a damn fine rifle. The first time I picked up an M-16, I almost cringed at the tinkly rattling noises it made. I hate aluminum and plastic weapons. If you ever come up with an M-14 in the configuration that you describe, please let me know. I want to be there when you fire it. Even in my old age, laughing my ass off is still one of my favorite things to do.

Agree, The M-14 rifle is by far the best weapon I ever used in the Marine Corps and Vietnam. It would fire without jamming up and as a left hand shooter more than 1 time hot brass came out of the M-16 and hit me in the face and one time lodged between my face and helmet strap. The M-16 sights were nothing short of a pain in the butt to adjust. Hit them once with a M-14 and they would stay down. Sorry if you don’t agree, but this is my opion.

Over all, the M1 was the best of them all. I qualified as an expert with this rifle. Those plastic things that came after the M1 cannot stand up to it.

Never qualified with the 16. However, as I recall the 500 yd line would be the easiest to hit. Baker target firing slow fire at a 20 inch bull! Even with the 16! Adjust and breathe. I’ll still take my 60 any day though. Bill 2/1 68-69
