Time with the Grunts

Time with the Grunts

As a new 2nd Lt with the 12th Marines at Mt Fuji, I was assigned to an infantry company as an forward observer. I asked my senior Lts in the battery what should I being doing with the grunts. They told me just to stay close to the Captain and he will let you know what he wants. I stayed with the captain for about 5 miles into a hike when he turned to me and asked “Lt where are we “? My answer was “I don’t know I am following you”. After that I always knew where we were…….

Dam, didn’t know SGT Grit had sold out to retirement, like many of the rest of us! Bought stuff here as it was helping an old Vietnam Vet as opposed to a conglomerate. Oh, well! Things do change, no wonder this newsletter has turned more into an informational PR Blog, then actual newsletter based on recent letters to the editors. Sad!! Let’s all remember men, Sgt. GRIT is under NEW MANAGEMENT. Grit sold the Company, it moved from OKlahoma City, Ok. to “someplace” Arkansas. Grit retired !!! Like the saying goes,”old Corps, new Corps.”
This is new management. And YES, I miss the OLD FORMAT too. S/F .

I agree with you this is almost a waste of time. The old format was better.

Keep in mind Marines, the DMD told us that “…it requires much more thought & intellect to create suggestions or concepts for improvement…” than we Marines are capable of producing.

RE: “…how many interesting stories…”
Without counting, several hundred from all MOS’s over the years May, and Bob Mauney just gave us a perfect example of one. LOL Thanks Bob. Just a great post!!
By the way Ronald, what Marine MOS is DMD?? Sense I an air of pretentiousness? Shall we be impressed? (Those are rhetorical questions.)

Aye, Aye fellow Marines…bring back the old format “STAT” (medical term for NOW”. Can’t seem to get adjusted to this stuff!!!

When I was stationed at Dong Ha, RVN in 1967 I went over to a grunt outfit to see a buddy of mine. When I went into his tent he and several other Marines had their ears to the tent wall and motioned for me to come over and be quiet. As it turned out a CO had his platoon commanders in a meeting. The CO started out by congratulating them on their enemy kills during recent missions. You could here the how happy it made the lieutenants to hear how pleased their CO was with their performance. THEN, the CO unloaded on them. Basically, he told them, (as I remember): “ We chopper you and your men out and drop you off at locations to conduct sweeps of designated areas. There ain’t a damn one of you know how to read a *?ck’n compass so you head out in the wrong direction, wind up stumbling right into the middle of a company of NVA and VC and have to fight your way out. And somehow you and your men survive.” You could have heard a pin drop as he left the meeting….Bob Mauney 1381

Ditto on all comments. There is no first person personality to the stories as they are now plus they lack any feelings projected by the writer. Some body tried to fix something that wasn’t broke.

You would think that by know somebody in the head shed would have gotten the message. Compared to when he first started – I remember when his catalog was only a couple of memegraphed (spelling??) pages – Grit gotten big time so guess he doesn’t have time to listen to his customers.

Ronald May, DMD - April 13, 2020

It’s simple & easy to criticize anything or anyone, but it requires much more thought & intellect to create suggestions or concepts for improvement………..as in how many interesting stories have either of you two submitted or encouraged from other former Marines??
